Rare examples of Homer Simpson being…pretty darn intelligent!

We all know Homer Simpson.

The fictional father, husband, and local mischief maker from the iconic TV series The Simpsons needs no introduction.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few decades, Homer is the main character from the show and is famously known for being dim witted and crude.

In one episode he is quite literally in The Simpsons dictionary under “American Bonehead".

Homer is synonymous with stupidity. He drinks excessively, he is impulsive (in all the bad ways), and he actively goes out of his way to avoid learning. Not only that but he never graduated from high-school, repeatedly puts his friends and family in mortal danger on a daily basis, and we was purposely selected by NASA to fly into space because he was a “blue collar slob".

But…what if, I told you that there were rare examples that proved that somewhere, deep inside that thick skull of his, there was…an actual brain?

Prepare to have your mind blown!

A firm understanding of religious and spiritual concepts from across the world

In season 5 episode 13 in an episode called Rosebud. Apu comes to Homer’s door to apologise and make things right between them both by “selling the concept of karmic realignment".

Karma is a Hindu religious concept which most average American would have little understanding of…but Homer completely lays the smack down with his unrivalled knowledge on karma and slams the door right in Apu’s face!

Homer may have just demonstrated that he has more knowledge on karma than a practicing Hindu.

An understanding of economic models:

In the 12th episode of season 16, The Simpsons go to the Communist country of China.

During their visit they are shown around by their Chinese tour guide who explains that they are a communist country.

This shocks Homer as he has seen so much capitalism around him on the trip.

This is an astute observation as China has adopted a significant amount of free market over the past decades and it could be easy to forget that China is still communist at all.

He is dead right and the fact he understands this shows he has half a brain!

Homer outsmarting the law.

When Springfield goes into prohibition the town is in shock. This focuses the mind of Homer Simpson, as drinking is…everything to him!

This leads to Homer running an underground black market drinks operation by filling bowling balls with home made booze which run all the way into Moe’s bar from the bowling alley.

Even after the town hires Rex Banner, their top guy to reform the police and give it a kick up the arse, Homer manages to continue to run his operation for some time!

Pretty clever!

Knowledge of thermodynamics.

During one of my favourite episodes “The PTA Dispands” Homer discusses Lisa’s perpetual motion machine. A machine which only seems to be getting faster and faster with the same amount of energy input.

Homer calls her in to set her straight with his unrivalled knowledge on thermodynamics (the idea that energy cannot be destroyed and only be transformed therefore dismissing the idea of Lisa’s creation).

That’s impressive!

Thanks for reading!
