5 times Marge Simpson was actually hilarious!
Marge Simpson is the essential, sensible, and level headed protagonist to keep the storyline and jokes flowing in The Simpsons — but here are 5 examples where she steals the show in her own right!
Marge Simpsons is a great character in The Simpsons. Her conflict with Homer and Bart is responsible for some of the greatest dialogue and comedy in animated history. Generally known as a “wet blanket” and always trying her best to keep the family on the straight and narrow, she can often be dismissed as a rather boring or unfunny character.
Here are 5 reasons why this is completely untrue!
1. I asked you to do one thing!
One of my favourite lines in Simpsons history has to be a Marge Simpson line. In “Milhouse Divided” Marge pressures Homer into having a fancy dinner party at their house with all the other parents. Several seconds before the guests are to arrive she asks Homer if he is ready.
This pans out to Homer in his pants playing Scalextric in the living room.
“The only thing I asked you to do for this party was put on clothes, and you didn't do it”.
Poor old Marge. She expects so little and doesn't even get that. The delivery of this line is made particularly funny as you can hear her die a little inside as she says it.
2. Big lame!
In “Marge Not Be Proud”, Bart accuses Marge of being lame. Marge responds with the classic line;
“Well, if loving my kids is lame, then I guess I’m just a big lame”.
This line is fantastic for numerous reasons, mainly because every single one of us as a child or teenager can relate to the lameness of a mother. Especially one who is as proud and unashamed as Marge.
3. She’s fine!
In “Fear of flying” Marge discovers that, yup, she has a fear of flying. She tries to bury it under the rug and Homer is as unhelpful as usual, out of fear of being blamed for everything himself. As her denial builds up it starts to come out in strange ways.
Lisa — “Look how tense she is.”
Homer — “She’s fine…Oh”.
4. NOT LENNY!!!
One of the few classic lines from post-season 9.
In “Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder”, Homer phones up Marge to make up some lame excuse as to why he cannot go home and continue to bowl with his friends.
He proceeds to tell Marge that…errrmm, (think brain think!)…Lenny is in the hospital!
This triggers Marge into a sense of devastation that something could have happened to someone as incredible and loving as…Lenny?
“Not Lenny…NOT LENNY!”
We all love Lenny, mainly because of his lameness. This is one of the fantastic jokes which powers through the seasons of The Simpson consistently and never fails to make fans laugh.
5. Marge wasted.
Oh, Marge, we’ve all been there! The family gets invited to a work do and the sauce is completely free!
In the episode “There’s No Disgrace Like Home” Homer is forced to go to Mr Burns birthday party. Homer is under a lot of pressure to put on a good impression out of fear of losing his job.
At least you can always count on sensible Marge, right?
What makes this scene so great is that Marge is almost always the voice of reason and sensibility, yet here we are. Dancing drunk with all the other wives. I bet you never thought you’d see Homer as the sober responsible one, eh?
